More Than 360 Years in Topsfield
The Congregational Church of Topsfield has been part of this community for generations. Our story is woven together with the story of Topsfield itself—shaped by people who gathered for worship, cared for their neighbors, faced change, and sought to live their faith in their own time.
A Church with Deep Roots
Our congregation has changed alongside Topsfield for generations. Buildings have changed, ministries have begun and ended, and each generation has faced its own questions about what it means to be the church.
Through those changes, people have continued to gather for worship, care for one another, serve their neighbors, and seek to live their faith in the world.
OUR BEGINNING
A Church Is Gathered — 1663
The Congregational Church of Topsfield was gathered in 1663, during a period of change and debate within New England Congregationalism.
CHURCH & COMMUNITY
A Church at the Heart of the Town
In 1703, the congregation’s third Meetinghouse was built in a more central location in the village—the same site on West Common where today’s Meetinghouse stands.
CHANGE & CONTINUITY
The Meetinghouse We Know Today — 1842
Built in 1842–1843, today’s Meetinghouse has served generations of worshipers while continuing to change with the congregation.
PAST & PRESENT
History Continues — 2022
More than three centuries after the Smith family worshiped with the congregation, their descendants returned to Topsfield for the dedication of the Smith Family Memorial.
